1. Book your session online

Select your area of law and an available appointment. Complete a short form telling us:

  • what your problem is and the questions you would like to ask;

  • the names of the people or organisations involved, so conflicts can be checked; and

  • any important dates, deadlines or forthcoming hearings.

There is no advance document upload or document review included. A brief, clear account is enough to request your session.

Your booking is provisional until the barrister accepts your instruction.

2. The barrister checks suitability

The barrister reviews your form to check for conflicts and consider whether useful advice can properly be given within the session.

Your problem need not be simple. What matters is whether your questions can be addressed meaningfully through a focused conversation, without reviewing documents beforehand. The barrister may ask you to clarify your questions or explain why a different service is needed.

If your instruction is accepted, the barrister or their chambers confirms the appointment and sends you the client care terms and payment details.

The fee is £396 including VAT, payable directly to the barrister or their chambers. No fee is payable until your booking is confirmed. Barristerly does not receive or hold your payment.

3. Speak face to face and plan your next step

Join your video consultation at the confirmed time. You have up to one hour to explain your concerns, ask questions and discuss your position with the barrister.

Depending on your matter, the advice may help you understand:

  • where you are likely to stand legally;

  • the strengths and weaknesses of a possible claim or response;

  • whether a matter is worth pursuing;

  • whether urgent action is needed; and

  • what further evidence or professional assistance may be required.

Afterwards, you receive a short next-steps note recording the main practical points. This is a brief reminder of the way forward, rather than a detailed written opinion.

Is this service right for you?

The scheme is designed for people who want focused legal advice before deciding what to do next. It can also help you make sense of an existing dispute or identify the questions that need further investigation.

Advice is based on the information you provide and the scope agreed with the barrister. Some questions cannot be answered fully without examining documents or undertaking further work; the barrister will explain any such limitations.

The fixed fee does not include document review, detailed legal drafting, a comprehensive review of your case or representation in proceedings. If further work is appropriate, you can discuss it with the barrister. Any additional work and fees must be agreed separately, with no obligation to proceed.
